Child Guidance PolicyTo comply with state regulation and to be consistent with our center's philosophy we have established the following discipline plan. This plan was adopted from Clair Cherry's book "Please Don't Sit On Kids". We felt that this book coincided with the philosophy of the school. It provided us with an easily understood but thorough guideline for discipline that can be easily taught to anyone. At Cataumet Preschool we have adopted a technique of discipline called "Non-Discipline". This technique was developed by Clair Cherry who is one of the leaders in Early Childhood Education. Non-discipline is based on a friendly, caring attitudes toward a healthy development and the children's needs. It gives careful regard to feelings and emotions, to unique differences between individuals, and preserves an atmosphere of acceptance, tolerance and patience. The assumption-the attitude-underlying this kind of discipline is that it will help children grow and learn in harmony and with one another. All staff members are trained in an array of alternatives to punishment that is refered to as the "Magic List".
--The "Magic List" is: •Anticipate trouble. •Give gentle reminders. •Inject humor. •Give praise or compliments. •Offer choices. •Offer encouragement •Clarify messages •Overlook small annoyances •Deliberately ignore provocation •Reconsider the situation •Point out natural or logical consequences. •Provide renewal time •Give hugs and caring •Arrange discussion among the children. •Provide discussion with an adult |
